WHAT MUST BE DONE?

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimension.”
– Oliver Wendell Holmes

Welcome back from your immersion experience! Just because you have completed your experience does not mean it has to be over! You now have the unique opportunity to allow this experience to impact and shape you and the decisions you make for the future. We invite you to continue delving into the meaning of Vincentians in Action. We offer here a few suggestions of how to get involved here in Chicago and beyond. We do not have all the answers, but we can help you to stay engaged in VIA and the tenets of our program while you ask questions and live into the answers. Please come by the University Ministry office to talk to someone for more information or about more options. Additionally, you can e-mail us at umintrips@depaul.edu.

TIPS FOR SHARING YOUR STORY

Sometimes it is difficult to share the experiences we have had with friends and family who may have never done something similar. It is important to share what you witnessed with those closest to you. Here are some ideas on how to begin…

  • Be genuine. Be true to your ideals and your experience.
  • Reflect on where your listener is coming from. Ask yourself: “Has this person ever had an experience like I have before? What is my relationship with this person?”
  • Ask yourself: Are my parents/friends/coworkers ready to hear what I have to say? Don’t judge!
  • Be prepared that some people will need you to tell them the essence of your story in just a few minutes.
  • Focus on people you met, not statistics
  • Do not take negative reactions or inattentiveness as a judgement of your experience. You know the true worth of what you have lived!
  • Understand that no one an validate or legitimate your experience of your – that is your responsibility.
  • Don’t forget what you have seen and where you have come from. Remember the importance of sharing the stories that are now a part of who you are.

HOW DO I KEEP THIS EXPERIENCE ALIVE?
  • Appreciation: Keep a journal. Continuing to record your thoughts, ideas and feelings as you continue to process your experience.
  • Dialogue: Share photographs. As you look at the photos, what people, events, moments stand out for you? Why?
  • Solidarity: Live values learned. Live in a way that honors the people you met during your immersion experience and what you learned.
